There was a great article in the New York Times yesterday that profiled the upcoming collaboration between Atlanta Ballet and Antwan "Big Boi" Patton of OutKast. If you haven't heard, the Midtown-based Ballet and Big Boi have teamed up in the production titled big, which will combine "earthy, syncopated choreography" and musical performances by Big Boi and other artists on his label to tell the story of a boy named Little Big. Like most people, my exposure to ballet is pretty much limited to a couple performances of the Nutcracker and the occasional clip of Mikhail Baryshnikov on TV. However, I am, like just about everyone else in this city, a fan of hip-hop, so I think this production could serve as a bridge to and an appreciation for an artform that is unfamiliar to a lot of us. The show will be particularly interesting because the choreographer, Lauri Stallings, has chosen to not incorporate what you would consider to be hip-hop dance moves into the choreography. The article also notes that the Ballet recently sold its Midtown offices to erase $2.75 million of debt (the building – located at 18th Street and West Peachtree – was sold to local condo developer Novare), which serves to highlight the many challenges the classical performing arts face as they try to survive as well as remain culturally relevant.

You can catch big at the Fox Theater from April 10th-13th. Ticket prices range from $25 to $125.
